Milkshake spent the night out of the stalls which was very concerning and also confusing as we had added extra straw to the two stalls she seemed to like and even added straw to the two sand stalls we have. The temperature got down to 38 last night which isn’t horrible for a healthy cow but might have been an issue for Milkshake as she’s not carrying as much “padding” as say Jamaica. Nugget, our horse, did sleep near her all night and that might have helped. The cows seem to ignore her.
She didn’t eat or drink much yesterday and that’s worrisome. Yesterday I had the idea to take her treat bucket and instead of treats we put the mineral powder in it and added water. She did seem to drink that down pretty good, but I didn’t see her eat much. Today however, she almost immediately drank half the bucket and did eat more. To help with the latter I took the droppings in the hay wagon, which mostly consists of loose stuff and put it on top of her regular alfalfa slabs. Given she has difficulty swallowing, I think this might have helped.
Our ranch veterinarian, Dr. Madelyn (Melchiors), will be here on Jan. 23rd to do a general wellness checkup on our animals, so she can take a gander at Milkshake too.
Cow tag number 316 stopped by to check on her friend. Before Milkshake got sick, her and 316 hung out a lot.
