Jamaica came to us from a local ranch and her backstory is very interesting.  When Jamaica was born it was during a severe winter in Utah.  The rancher went to check on the cows and discovered one of them had given birth but the calf was nowhere to be seen.  They trudged out into the snow and when they found her, all that showed was a black snout poking out of the snow.  They wrapped her up and took her into the house.  Apparently they weren’t expecting her to live.  But to everyone’s surprise she did.
Fast forward a couple of years and the rancher and family moved to Arizona and Jamaica became a free range cow.  However the diet of a cow in Utah is much different than that of a free range Arizona cow and Jamaica wasn’t doing well as a result.  The rancher reached out to us and we brought Jamaica and her calf Marley over to live at the sanctuary where they are fed alfalfa every day.

Jamaica and her calf Marley are by far some of the sweetest animal friends we have on the ranch.  Jamaica loves to be brushed and groomed, which happens often.  The only exception is when it’s feeding time, then her name switches to Beef Jerky, because she gets very pushy and wants her food!!!  That’s when this picture was taken.   That’s her, “just put the food in the bin and step away” look. 🙂  But seriously we love Jamaica and are thrilled we have her here.

Upkeep: Jamaica weighs approximately 1800 pounds and she can eat a TON of alfalfa every day. Approximately $15 worth, per day. That means monthly it takes approximately $450 just to feed her the basics. That doesn’t include the treats she gets daily as well.

Nugget came to us from a local working ranch. She had developed an issue with one of her rear legs that prevented her from being ridden for any extended time and thus no longer a real working horse.

Now Nugget enjoys her days lounging around, eating carrots (favorite) and being taken on walks by her new human mom Susan.

Upkeep: Nugget weighs approximately 1200 pounds and she can eat a good bit of alfalfa every day. Approximately $10 worth, per day. That means monthly it takes approximately $300 just to feed her the basics. That doesn’t include the carrots, treats, and special chews to relief her leg pain.
